8th March 2021

It’s International Women's Day and FHP would like to take this opportunity to celebrate the fantastic women working across our business in both the London and Leeds offices – and even introduce a couple of them!

For over a century, International Women’s Day, held on the 8th March each year, has marked a day of celebration and advocacy for women’s rights and equality around the world.

Although the Engineering and Construction sectors have traditionally been viewed as a male environment, there are many women - both past and present - who have also blazed a trail through these industries. With the talent and ability we see in our own staff and the growing number of women choosing to enter the field, we have very high hopes for the future of women in the construction industry and beyond.

A shining example of this is Nicola Harrison, our marvellous Document Controller and Office Manager at the FHP Leeds office:

Tell us a bit about yourself

My name is Nicola Harrison and I work in the Leeds FHP office.  Outside of work, I love spending time with my family and friends and I try and enjoy the Great British Countryside, walking my dog when I can. I also love to travel and see new places, and I am hoping to visit Bora Bora one day

What is your Job Title?

Document Controller & Office Manager

When did you join FHP?

January 2017

What made you choose a career in the Construction and Engineering industry?

I actually fell into it by accident – I started as trainee office assistant in 2003 at Bluestone now known as Morgan Sindall Plc, worked my way up to Site Secretary and then worked on large scale construction sites, which I absolutely loved.

How do you feel about working in a traditionally male-dominated sector?

I enjoy working in a male dominated industry. I have done it for so long it is normal to me. It doesn’t deter me from thriving and enjoying my work and I always feel included.

What is it like working at FHP?

I really enjoy working for FHP as it's a great company to work for and they really support you whenever you need it. It is a fast paced, high energy environment where the team works very well together.

What impact do you feel you’ve had since joining?

I feel I have had a good impact on the overall team energy, helping to ensure projects are handed over on time.

What do you enjoy most?

I enjoy working with a great team and the fast pace and satisfaction of handing over a project and getting great client feedback.

What advice would you give to women thinking about a career in the Construction industry?

Go for it! It will do wonders for your self-confidence and you will really enjoy the rewards of working together as a great team.

Who is your most important female role model and why?

My mum was a great guide and role model in my life before she passed away. She taught me no matter what, keep going, be strong and succeed. Don’t rely on anyone to save you. Be strong enough to save yourself, work hard and reap the rewards.
