National Apprenticeship Week is a week-long celebration that brings together businesses and apprentices across the country to shine a light on the positive impact that apprenticeships make to individuals, businesses and the wider economy. Apprentices have always played an integral role in FHP, bringing with them fresh perspectives, bright ideas and providing them with #SkillsforLife.

We would like to introduce you to Daniel, one of our current FHP apprentices who is doing just that.

Tell us about yourself

My name is Daniel Piper-Morris, I have been working as a mechanical building services engineer since 2021. I am currently doing a degree apprenticeship at London South Bank University.

What is your job title?

Mechanical Design Engineer.

When did you join FHP?

October 2024.

What drew you to apply here?

I wanted to work at a larger consultancy to work with a larger pool of senior engineers and learn from them. I also wanted to gain experience working on different types of projects.

What qualification are you studying towards?

A bachelor's degree in building services engineering.

Did you have any prior training or qualifications?

I have a Certificate of Higher Education in Mechanical Engineering.

Tell us about your role, what does a typical day look like?

My role requires me to design heating, ventilation domestic water and public health services. This includes RIBA stage 4 calculations, drawings and mark-ups, plant selections and schedules. I also write reports and project specifications, attend design team meetings and work alongside different parts of the design team to complete the projects.

What do you enjoy most about your job?

I enjoy designing systems and the problem solving that is required to do so. I also enjoy working in teams to achieve a common goal.

What have you learnt?

Since starting my apprenticeship, I have learnt how to manage my time better, how to juggle multiple projects and how to manage projects. Alongside how to design the services inside a building.

What would you say to others thinking about an apprenticeship?

I think apprenticeships are great, I personally learn a lot on the job and I have noticed both my knowledge and confidence increase since starting. There is also the financial gain because my higher education is covered by the government and employer.
