Bank Station Capacity Upgrade (BSCU) is a project to improve the capacity through Bank station on the London Underground.
Bank-Monument station is the third busiest interchange on the London Underground and through modifications to the Underground network over the years and with five different line interchanges, the station is not well equipped to cope with the number of passengers that use the station.
The purpose of BSCU was to improve the capacity of the station and passenger flow by simplifying the interchange through the station. This included a new station entrance, three new sets of triple bank escalators, new step free access and new moving walkway amongst various new cross passages and walkways.
The Role of FHP
Following successful delivery and implementation of a previous MEP project, TClarke approached FHP to request the services of a Design Manager to oversee the completion of the remaining design packages at BSCU.
While this was not a service FHP were actively marketing at the time, it was one they were able to offer, having several staff with the necessary experience to fulfil such a role.
Challenges
Given the advanced stage of the project when FHP’s services were employed, knowledge of both the project as a whole and the outstanding design packages had to be gained very quickly on a steep learning curve.
Providing management to an already-established design team was an expected issue but this was swiftly mitigated by having individual meetings with each member to understand their role to date and manage their upcoming tasks and workload.
Due to the nature and the stage of the project, FHP had to ensure the client was being accurately and robustly represented in the daily meetings with the main contractor and London Underground, as well as presenting a clear case of progress and estimated programme to completion.
